For The Seasons, Pt. 1: Our Summer Selections

July 29, 2016

With July drawing to a close, and the season halfway over, we spent some time reflecting on our favourite things about these hot Ottawa summers. Humidity aside, is there anything better than long sunny days- their warmth lingering well into the evening air? Relaxing on the dock at the cottage, heading out for canoe trip adventures, family barbecues- just a few ways we celebrate 12 weeks of summer bliss outdoors. But what about indoors? Our designers selected their top three picks of new and noteworthy items for your home- each with a touch of ‘summer,’ to bring the outdoors in. Luckily- all are available right here in Ottawa!

Miranda’s Top Three Summer Picks

nesttun-bed-frame-white__0418618_PE575681_S4 Ikea’s new Nesttun bed frame ($199.00) won’t break the bank. Its bright white, airy design would work perfectly in a guest bedroom to keep things fresh, spacious and inviting. It’s a blank slate, and while it could be dressed up with colourful linens, we think it works especially well with monochromatic stark white, as pictured. Find it here.

21632_53849Zone’s ‘Pecan’ cushion in green ($49.50) is the perfect on-trend decorative accent for this season. Find it here. Vibrant leafy prints (palm, banana leaf, fern) are everywhere right now. A cushion is a low-cost way to keep things stylish without over-spending. Plus, you can switch it out come fall/winter (…and bring it back again in spring).

This Matt Wallace (from NaCoille Studio) print can be found at Goods. Have a look online here. NaCoille are known for furniture pieces made from old growth, reclaimed wood from the Ottawa Valley. Branching out artistically, they have created these prints from locally salvaged logs. This limited print ($50), featuring a cross-section from an Eastern Hemlock tree, has sold out. A similar print of Wallace’s is still available here, or check out their Etsy page. This simple reflection of nature is rich with history. Each ring is a celebration of another year gone by. Can you count the number of Ottawa summers this tree lived through? We know we’d be proud to honour it with a spot on our wall. It’ll work in any room!

These cotton throws (from Sarah Richardson Design- find them here for $90-$105) are available in a variety of summery hues. This lightweight blanket will work on a bed, sofa, or outdoors, keeping things cozy without all the bulk of a thicker blanket.

Structube’s selection of BONA1 accent tables ($59, here), are quirky and colourful. If you have the space, you could cluster a few of them together to really liven things up. These bold primaries are a perfect reflection of vibrant summer streetscapes.

wine lantern (004)

This battery-operated wine lantern could be used indoors, but it’s perfect for a porch or balcony, too! From Zone ($22), this whimsical, romantic piece is portable (read: very versatile). Just don’t get it wet, and bring it back inside with you after a relaxing evening watching the summer sun set, counting your lucky stars.

Come October, look for a follow up ‘For The Seasons’ piece with our favourites for fall!
